GOD GIVES US HIS HOLY SPIRIT

Ok, now we know that God gives us His Holy Spirit when we believe, if not read Receiving The Holy Spirit by the same author: which should make it abundantly clear to you. Now, we come to the manifestation of that Spirit.

THE MANIFESTATION OF GOD'S GIFT OF HOLY SPIRIT

Ok, God gives us Holy Spirit when we believe, but there is more. God also gives us the manifestation of the gift : a demonstration of the Spirit that shows that we truly have the gift of Holy Spirit.

I Corinthians 12:7-11:

But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man towards profiting. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man his own as it wills.

It is as the Spirit wills.

THE MANIFESTATION OF SPEAKING IN TONGUES

I want to take a look at this gift of speaking in tongues. It is a gift that God gives to us, so let's take some time and see what God teaches us about this gift in His Word the Bible. Remember it is God's word, not man's; so, I encourage you to receive it as just that_ God's Word_ His teaching.

JESUS'S TEACHING ON SPEAKING IN TONGUES

Mark 16:15-20:

And he said unto them, "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. " "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. " "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; " "They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. " So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

Isn't that wonderful? Jesus himself talked about this gift. He said it was a sign that would follow those who believed. Do you believe? All things are possible to them that believe.

Notice that Jesus said that it was a sign. Speaking in new tongues is a sign that would follow those who believed in him. So, speaking in tongues is real evidence of something greater that our selves, because, How can we speak in another language, if we do not know how to speak that language?

Notice also that speaking in tongues is a sign that confirms the word. Speaking in tongues confirms that the Bible is the Word of God.

WHAT IS SPEAKING IN TONGUES?

To answer this question, let's take a look at the record of the first receiving of the gift of Speaking in tongues. It occurred on the day of Pentecost over 2000 years ago.

Acts 2:1-4:

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them distributed tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

So we see from this Scripture that they spoke in tongues, "as the Spirit gave them utterance." So we see that speaking in tongues is speaking as the Spirit gives the utterance, speaking words that the Spirit gives. Isn't that marvelous? We move our lips, our tongues, we push the sounds out of our mouths, but what we speak is as the Spirit of God gives us to speak. Therefore, speaking in tongues is speaking by the Spirit of God.

If Speaking in tongues is speaking by the Spirit of God, then a person must have the Spirit first, before he can speak in tongues. Remember we spoke about this in Receiving The Holy Spirit by the same author. Now, I want to teach you a little bit more about this gift of speaking in tongues.

GOD DOES NOT WANT US TO BE IGNORANT

I Corinthians 12:1:

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.

God does not want us to be ignorant. He wants us to know what is going on. This verse is talking about the things of the Spirit: the things that the Spirit produces. God does not want us to be ignorant about that.

I Corinthians 12:2:

Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.

Dumb idols are idols that can not speak, but the spirit of God speaks. It is not dumb, but knows how to speak. Speaking in tongues is evidence of this. Oh! Let us learn how to speak in tongues again: so God can be glorified. It is not a gift gone away, but here today, for all who will receive.

I Corinthians 12:3:

Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, if not in the Holy Spirit.

When you are speaking in tongues, you are speaking by the Spirit of God, not by your own spirit. It is God's Spirit speaking in you.

THERE ARE DISTRIBUTIONS OF GIFTS

I Corinthians 12:4-6:

Now there are distributions of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are distributions of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are distributions of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.

Through God's choice or option there are gifts. If God chooses to give you a gift then He does. It is through His choice or option that there are gifts.

I Corinthians 12:7-11:

But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, distributing to every man his own as it wills.

The Spirit distributes to each man his own as it wills. As the Spirit wills it gives us gifts: one of which is speaking in tongues.

ONE BODY MANY MEMBERS

I Corinthians 12:12-31:

For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many. If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. And if they were all one member, where were the body? But now are they many members, yet but one body. And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary: And those members of the body, which we think to be less honorable, upon these we bestow more abundant honor; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness. For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honor to that part which lacked: That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another. And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honored, all the members rejoice with it. Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. And who indeed God hath set in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? But egearly desire the greater gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

Speaking in tongues is one of the parts of the body of Christ: like a hand or a foot is part of our bodies. It is not the whole body, but just a part. It is one of the functions God gives to the body of Christ, and we can't say that we have no need of it: that would be like the eye saying to the hand, I have no need of you. All the parts are needed to make a fully functioning body, and speaking in tongues is one of those parts.

Paul is now going to show to us a, "more excellent way."

A MORE EXCELLENT WAY

I Corinthians 13:1-7:

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not love, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not love, it profiteth me nothing. Love suffereth long, and is kind;love envieth not; love vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no bad; Rejoiceth not in wrong, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

When we speak in another language,(tongue),we are either speaking in a tongue of men or of angles. If we are speaking a tongue of men, then it could be understood by men somewhere on earth. If we are speaking a tongue of angles, then it could only be understood in heaven. And, of course, we must always speak in love in order for it to profit us anything.

TONGUES WILL CEASE

I Corinthians 13:8-13:

Love never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. And now abideth faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Tongues will cease one day. We will not be speaking in tongues forever in the kingdom of God, but it is just a temporary manifestation. When Jesus Christ comes, then we will be completely spirit and be with Him: there will be no need for speaking in tongues then, for we will be home with him for evermore.

WE ARE TO DESIRE SPIRITUAL GIFTS

I Corinthians 14:1:

Follow after love, and desire spiritual gifts, but more strongly that ye may prophesy.

Paul wants us to desire spiritual gifts.

SPEAKING IN TONGUES IS SPEAKING TO GOD

I Corinthians 14:2:

For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

When you speak in a tongue, you are speaking to God and not to men. You are addressing God: speaking out towards Him, not towards men. However, a person does not understand what he is saying when he speaks in a tongue. What he is speaking is a, "mystery," to him. He does not understand what he is saying.

I Corinthians 14:3:

But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

But when you prophesy, you are speaking to men. You are speaking in a language that men understand so they can receive: edification, exhortation, and comfort. Isn't that wonderful? That is a tremendous gift and blessing from God.

SPEAKING IN TONGUES BUILDS YOU UP

I Corinthians 14:4:

He that speaketh in an unknown tongue builds up himself; but he that prophesieth builds up the church.

When you speak in a tongue as the Spirit gives you utterance, you are building yourself up.

I Corinthians 14:5:

I would that ye all spake with tongues, but more strongly that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive building up.

Paul encourages us to prophesy in the church so that the church may be built up. He does not discourage us from speaking in tongues, for he wishes that we all spake with tongues.

SEEK THE EDIFYING OF THE CHURCH

I Corinthians 14:6-13:

Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle? So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air. There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification. Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me. Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church. Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.

So we are to seek to the edifying of the church. If we come to church and begin speaking in a unknown tongue, no one will understand us. Therefore, no one will be built up, and we will be as a barbarian to them. We don't want that, so, if we speak in tongues in a church, we are to interpret what we say. Interpretation is another gift of the Spirit that we will discuss later. God Bless You.

SPEAKING IN TONGUES IS PRAYER

I Corinthians 14:14:

For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

When you speak in a tongue it is the Spirit praying. Isn't' that wonderful? It is not you praying with your mind, but the Spirit is praying for you and others. Isn't that great? You don't have to think of what to pray, but the Spirit gives the words: you just speak them forth like we talked about earlier on the day of Pentecost when the disciples first spoke in tongues.

SPEAKING IN TONGUES IS PSALMING

I Corinthians 14:15:

What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will psalm with the spirit, and I will psalm with the understanding also.

Psalming with the Spirit is speaking the wonderful works of God in Spirit. When you manifest speaking in tongues you are speaking of the greatness of God. A psalm is a poem of praise to God speaking of His greatness. This is what we are doing when we speak in tongues: psalming God.

WHEN YOU SPEAK IN TONGUES YOU ARE GIVING THANKS TO GOD

I Corinthians 14:16-17:

Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest? For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified

These three: prayer, psalming, and giving of thanks are what you are doing when you speak in tongues. It is as the Spirit gives to speak out, so, you don't know which of these the Spirit is operating, you just trust that what ever the Spirit is saying that it is good and pleasing to God.

HOW TO RECEIVE THE GIFT OF TONGUES

I know now that you would love to receive into manifestation the gift of speaking in tongues. You can. God is willing to give you the gift: if you believe. Do you believe?

God has given this gift to the church of which you are a member. When you confessed in your mouth, "Lord Jesus," and believed in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you received the gift of Holy Spirit that God gives to every believer: of which you are one. So, you have the power of the Holy Spirit within you based on what the Bible says, and the Bible is true because it is God's word, not man's. So you can trust it.

If you want to receive the gift of speaking in tongues as the Spirit gives you the utterance, then follow these instructions: it is very simple. When you speak in tongues it is the Spirit that gives the words, you just simply speak them forth. You use your mouth, your throat, your voice box. The Spirit of God does not move your lips for you, you are in complete control. You can stop or start speaking in tongues when ever you like. You are in complete control. The Spirit does not possess you and force you to speak in another language, you do it by your own will, but what you speak is as the Holy Spirit guides. It gives the words to you, and you by your own will speak them forth. You make the sounds with your own mouth, lips, and tongue, but what you speak is as the Spirit gives you the utterance.

It is very important that you push the words out: just trust God that he is giving the utterance, you are just pushing the sounds out as He gives them to you to speak forth.

Another thing that is very important is that you do not stop speaking: keep pushing the sounds out. At first you will think that you are just making noise but keep speaking, do not give up, but keep speaking as the Spirit gives you the utterance. Soon the words will be flowing out of you like water, and you will be speaking a new language.

Did you do it? Did you speak in tongues? Isn't God great? If you did, I want you to contact me and let me know. It is very important that you get follow up so you can learn more and stay in contact with others. It is a very important thing to speak in tongues and manifest the power of God. If you did not receive the gift, don't worry, God loves you and will give you some other gift_ I'm sure, but if He did I want you to speak in tongues alot. Keep speaking in tongues, get very fluid with it. Remember God gives you the words, you just keep speaking them forth. You are magnifying God, Speaking of His greatness. Isn't that great? What a gift from God. Now you know that the Holy Spirit is in you. Just keep speaking as the Spirit gives you the utterance.
